The Church of England has issued a set of climate-conscious commandments to reduce the amount of plastic we use over Lent. It has been circulated to each of the church’s 42 dioceses and includes calls for parishes to ditch disposable cups and encourage worshippers to bring their own mugs to church.
Ruth Knight, the church’s environmental policy manager, said that the guide was partly inspired by Blue Planet II, the acclaimed BBC series that highlighted the damage wreaked in the oceans by discarded plastic. It contains a tip for every day leading up to Easter.
The guide focuses on five areas, including food, kitchen and bathroom products, clothing, general homeware, and travel items. Disposable razors, liquid hand soap and wet wipes are out of bounds, while you should also stick a “No junk mail” sign on your letterbox. The guide asks people to commit to making three long-term changes to their plastic usage beyond Easter.
