I’m beginning the process of recovery after my knee replacement at The Royal Free in London. This is a very impressive hospital – I can’t fault the standard of care. It was also a lovely environment because the team of nurses and doctors was truly international and everyone had interesting stories to tell. It felt like a small example of how the world should be – very different people working together for the good of humankind. I was also very fortunate to share a small ward with two women who have become friends – Erica (a psychotherapist) and an elderly Jewish lady – Mrs Robinson. We are keeping in touch and comparing notes regarding the process of recovery. We were joined for a short time by a Scottish lady who inadvertently did something I’ve always wanted to do but never dared – she pressed the wrong button and found herself almost up at the ceiling. Needless to say this caused great hilarity. I was also blessed with a wonderful view over the city – from my bed I could see The Shard, The Gherkin and Canary Wharf, The London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster and Big Ben!
At the moment I’m recovering at home. I’m now able to walk (indoors) without crutches and am going to physiotherapy weekly. I have daily exercises to do and have to use an ice pack three time daily to reduce the swelling. I won’t be back taking services for some time but may be able to pop in for the odd event – it was lovely to sit in the congregation for Kira and Jamie’s wedding last week. I’m missing you all!
