The ‘Weavers Wheel’ arrives at Knuzden

WeaversWheel1WeaversWheel6A pedestrian island is being constructed on Bank Lane, next to St. Oswald’s Community Hall. It will be a safe crossing point for people using the Weavers Wheel cycling and walking route. The route will come down the Arran Trail and cross at the Hall. It will then continue to Accrington Road along the footpath revived after a campaign by the Vicar a few years back.

WeaversWheel4 WeaversWheel2 WeaversWheel5 The lower part of the footpath to Accrington Road, has already been upgraded for the new route. The upper part, past the old mill lodge, is to be done next week while work on the crossing has now started.

The ‘Weavers Wheel’ is a 26km cycling and walking route encircling Blackburn. It is being created by Blackburn with Darwen Council but it is the inspiration of residents Kev and Vicky Riddehough. Watch their video…

As well as the main walking and cycling ‘wheel’ there will be spurs radiating to places of employment such as Whitebirk, and ‘spokes’ into Blackburn Town Centre and Oswaldtwistle. This way, cyclists and walkers will be able to get to employment, education, retail and leisure from the ‘wheel’. The idea is based on the successful Preston Guild Wheel, which now attracts nearly 100,000 cyclists a year. It should all be finished and open to cyclists and walkers by 2017.
